Community Learning Hubs

Safe places for kids during COVID-19.

What are Community Learning Hubs?

The Allegheny County Community Learning Hubs are a great option for parents who need child care when in-person school is not in session (PDF). A partnership between Allegheny County, Allegheny County Partners for Out-Of-School Time (APOST), and Trying Together, most Learning Hubs are open all day on weekdays, but parents should check with individual Hubs for exact times. Free Wi-Fi and headphones will be provided, but children should bring their own technology device (laptop computer, tablet, phone).

At Learning Hubs, staff will help to facilitate virtual curriculum from a child’s school district in the morning by:

  • helping them to get online each morning and keep them motivated to engage virtually;
  • troubleshooting throughout the day and checking that they are completing assignments;
  • facilitating connections with their teachers during their office hours and other instructional supports; and
  • being attentive to their social and emotional needs.

In the afternoon, fun activities will be provided.

Locations

There are more than 50 Community Learning Hubs in Allegheny County (map). Most locations are open Monday through Friday during normal school hours.

Eligibility

Every Learning Hub has free spots available for low-income families, with priority for families experiencing homelessness, families involved in child welfare or other human services, and children of essential workers. Some Learning Hub locations offer flexibility with payment including private pay, subsidies, and free options. Please contact a specific location for more information.

How to Enroll

The easiest way to enroll is to contact the Community Learning Hub of interest directly (PDF; or see list above). To discuss which Learning Hub is best or for assistance, contact Early Learning Resource Center (ELRC) Region 5 by calling 1-888-340-3572 or emailing elrc5@alleghenycounty.us.

Health & Safety

Allegheny County, Trying Together, and APOST are committed to the safety of children who attend the Hubs and the staff who care for them. Each Learning Hub must adhere to the COVID-19 health and safety guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and Allegheny County. The following health and safety precautions have been put into place:

  • children and staff will be screened daily for their temperature and any symptoms;
  • children will be grouped in pods of 10 or fewer and will spend the entire day
    with that pod;
  • physical distancing will be maintained with adequate space, desks, and chairs; and
  • children must wear their own mask at all times, except when eating or drinking.
Additional Resources

In addition to the Learning Hubs, there are many other resources available to help families at this time including:

Allegheny Child Care

Allegheny Child Care is a unique pilot project that was developed to support the care and education needs of families. Caregivers and parents of young children can search available spots at all early learning, after school, summer camp, and virtual programs in Allegheny County in real-time with the Allegheny Child Care, After School, and Summer Camps finder tool.

For information on how to identify high-quality early learning programs and learn about their COVID-19 procedures, view the following resources:

The Allegheny Child Care Finder Tool was funded through the generous support of The Heinz Endowments and Eden Hall Foundation and is managed by Trying Together in partnership with the Allegheny County Department of Human Services and Allegheny Partners for Out-of-School Time (APOST). For more information about Allegheny Child Care, email .
