DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for UnConference: Engagement in Out-of-School Time Programs scheduled for Thursday\, June 5 at Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center. Join Trying Together\, APOST\, and the Allegheny Department of Human Services for a day full of informative sessions and workshops. \nParticipants will be able to attend expert-led sessions that focus on mindfulness techniques\, opening the senses and immersing oneself in nature\, behavior management\, PBS programs that cover such topics as literacy and social and emotional wellness\, and developing lasting relationships with students. \nUpon registering\, attendees will be asked to select from Track A for First Aid/CPR\, or Track B or C for three mini-sessions. \nRegister now. \nDetails\n\nThursday\, June 5\n8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.\nCarnegie Mellon University\nEntertainment Technology Center\n700 Technology Drive\nPittsburgh\, PA 15219\n\nA light breakfast and lunch will be served to participants. The UnConference will begin with a choice of First Aid/CPR or three mini-workshops. The online coursework must be completed prior to the in-person class. Access to the online coursework will be provided via email in advance of the event. It is advised to complete the online coursework – which encompasses about three to four hours – at least 48 hours prior to the in-person course. You will need proof of completion by providing a copy of your completion email either printed or on a mobile device to participate in the in-person class. \nTrack B: Mini Sessions\nWellness Through Nature Chilling\nPresenters: Patty Himes and Kathryn Hunninen\nThe Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy’s workshop will focus on how slowing down\, opening your senses\, and immersing in nature has emotional\, mental\, and physical health benefits for you and the youth you serve. The workshop will include practicing some of these engaging activities and mindfulness techniques that can be done anywhere. These flexible activities can be used during transition times and as a part of your program. \nMindfulness for Co-Regulation\nPresenters: Shannon Jenkins\nIf we want to better understand our students\, a good place to start is the autonomic nervous system. During this workshop hosted by Awaken Pittsburgh\, participants will learn about the different human nervous system states\, discuss some common triggers\, and learn strategies to help us and our students feel more grounded\, safe\, and ready to learn. \nPositive Behavior Management: Facilitator Guide\nPresenters: Kierra Price\nThis workshop by Brookline Teen Outreach focuses on understanding behavior management through a lens of positive connection instead of punishment. The workshop will break down key concepts of behavior management\, learning how to identify and apply effective interventions based on individual needs\, and engaging in scenario-based problem-solving to practice these skills. \nTrack C: Mini Sessions\nRegulate & Recharge: Simple Tools for You and Your Community\nPresenters: Tessa Karel\nDuring this workshop by Open Up Pittsburgh\, participants will be able to explore simple\, engaging self-regulation tools through yoga\, breathing exercises\, thought strategies\, and social games. These activities help youth navigate moments of dysregulation and can be used across all ages. By practicing together\, you’ll support both individual well-being and community care in your program. \nPBS 101\nPresenters: Cathy Cook and Gina Masciola\nThis workshop will explore how PBS is a treasure trove of digital and nondigital resources for educators. WQED Education Department staff will provide a comprehensive overview of the most useful and well-liked PBS programs and media tools. Explore the variety of PBS materials on literacy\, numeracy\, and social and emotional wellness in this fast-paced session that integrates games with books\, apps\, and videos\, while connecting home to school and back. SUMMARY:Theiss Training Center: Becoming Trauma Aware\, Informed and Proficient
DESCRIPTION:The University of Pittsburgh’s Theiss Training Center will host a series titled Becoming Trauma Aware\, Informed\, and Proficient from January to March and from May to June. \nLearn More\nThe center’s online course on trauma is designed for professionals working with young children and their families in early childhood settings. The series will be offered periodically and each can be taken as a standalone course or participants can attend all three. \nMicrosoft Teams links will be shared with participants after they register for the courses. \nThe Courses\nBecoming Trauma Aware discusses how the path to becoming trauma proficient begins with a basic understanding of trauma and what young children’s reaction to trauma can look like in the context of their play and behaviors. The session will lay the foundation for understanding trauma by developing an awareness of what it is and how it reveals itself. \nBecoming Trauma Informed will take a step back to look at recent understanding of early brain development. It will share how babies’ brains develop in tandem with close relationship building\, how trauma disrupts relationships and the building of brain architecture during this stage\, and how strong relationships can build resilience. \nToward Trauma Proficiency applies information presented in the second session. Looking at a case study\, the group will analyze trauma and relationship information that may indicate early traumatic experiences impacting the child’s current psychological functioning. It will then assess behaviors presented to identify classroom strengths that support children whose needs are met and understand how to identify children whose history and behaviors may indicate a need to refer for services. \nSchedule and Registration\nThe three courses will be presented from January to March and again from May to June. DESCRIPTION:The Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL) and Parent to Parent of Pennsylvania will host a workshop in June that will help participants learn how to develop and share their family’s story and experiences. \nLearn More\nLifting Family Voices will instruct attendees – pregnant women or parents or caregivers of children\, from birth to five years – on how to make their voices heard\, influence decisions\, and create a more supporting community for  all. \nSpace is limited for the workshop and is on a first come\, first served basis. Americans with Disabilities Act accommodation requests can be made during registration. \nRegistration and requests must be received by Friday\, May 16. \nReimbursement for child care and travel expenses within guidelines will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Trying Together and ELRC Region 5 are partnering to provide in person and hybrid First Aid\, Pediatric First Aid\, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)\, and automated external defibrillator (AED) trainings to early childhood professionals. \nAbout the Course\nThis PQAS-certified in-person course provides life-saving skills in alliance with The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)’s Best Practices for Workplace First Aid Training Programs. \nCertification will be issued upon successful completion of the course. This certification is valid for two years. \nThe cost is $70. \nPLEASE NOTE: Successful course completion requires full participation in classroom and skill sessions\, as well as successful performance in skill and knowledge evaluations. \nParticipants will be conducting strenuous activities\, such as performing CPR on the floor. If you have a medical condition or disability that will prevent you from taking part in the skills practice sessions\, please let your instructor know so that accommodations can be made for the practice portion.
