The Brazelton Touchpoints Center is offering a course on how to strengthen collaborations with families\, even when educators and family members have different points of view. \nLearn More\nThe Touchpoints in Schools course consists of 22 training hours\, including six monthly hour-long virtual reflective practice sessions. Attendance is required at all live sessions\, each of which is four hours long. Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate of attendance. \nWhat You Will Learn\nIn the course\, the Touchpoints approach will offer strategies for educators to: \n\nUnderstand the process of students’ development and examine how and why change in behavior occurs\nPartner with families to promote child and family strengths\nAddress developmental or behavioral concerns with families\nReexamine assumptions\, biases\, interactions\, and communication with families to foster students’ overall success\n\nThe training is ideal for teachers\, instructional assistants\, school counselors\, family and community engagement specialists\, out-of-school time providers\, and administrators in a K-6 setting. \nMore Details\nThe course will run from noon to 4 p.m. ET and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. PT on Aug. 27 and 29 and Sept. 3 and 5. DESCRIPTION:The University of Pittsburgh’s Theiss Training Center for Trauma and Early Childhood Mental Health is hosting a three-part online course on trauma in August and September. \nLearn More\nThe three-part virtual training series on Trauma Proficient Practiced is designed specifically for professionals working with young children and their families in early childhood settings. The series will be offered periodically; each can be taken as a standalone course or participants can attend all three. \nTeri Pentz\, MS\, LPC\, NCC\, Infant Mental Health Mentor (Clinical)\, will lead all three courses. \nMicrosoft Teams links will be shared with participants after they register for the courses. \nBecoming Trauma Aware\nThe first course discusses how the path to becoming trauma proficient begins with a basic understanding of trauma and what young children’s reaction to trauma can look like in the context of their play and behaviors. The session will lay the foundation for understanding trauma by developing an awareness of what it is and how it reveals itself. Attendees will discuss the basic definition and different types of trauma and trauma reactions. Then\, they will explore trauma in early childhood and what it can look like when processed through behavior. \nBecoming Trauma Aware will be held on: \n\nAug. 22\, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.\n1 hour of PQAS or Act 48 credit will be available; there is no cost to attend or for PQAS hours\, but Act 48 hours will incur a separate fee.\nPD Registry Course #153308\nEvent ID: 370793\nRegister\n\nBecoming Trauma Informed\nWith a basic awareness of what trauma response looks like in children\, this second session will take a step back to look at recent understanding of early brain development. DESCRIPTION:Building collaborative relationships is among the most important responsibilities for teachers\, principals\, and other K-6 education professionals. The Brazelton Touchpoints Center is offering a course on how to strengthen collaborations with families\, even when educators and family members have different points of view. \nLearn More\nThe Touchpoints in Schools course consists of 22 training hours\, including six monthly hour-long virtual reflective practice sessions. Attendance is required at all live sessions\, each of which is four hours long. Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate of attendance. \nWhat You Will Learn\nIn the course\, the Touchpoints approach will offer strategies for educators to: \n\nUnderstand the process of students’ development and examine how and why change in behavior occurs\nPartner with families to promote child and family strengths\nAddress developmental or behavioral concerns with families\nReexamine assumptions\, biases\, interactions\, and communication with families to foster students’ overall success\n\nThe training is ideal for teachers\, instructional assistants\, school counselors\, family and community engagement specialists\, out-of-school time providers\, and administrators in a K-6 setting. \nMore Details\nThe course will run from noon to 4 p.m. ET and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. PT on Aug. 27 and 29 and Sept. 3 and 5. DESCRIPTION:Women for a Health Environment are hosting a professional development session – Green Cleaning – in early September at the Carnegie Library of Hazelwood. \nLearn More\nCleaning\, sanitizing\, and disinfecting products can cause serious irritation to the lungs and trigger – or even cause – asthma. Even those marked as “green” can cause pollution in the air\, water\, and soil. \nIn early childcare centers\, it is important to make sure that materials and surfaces are properly cleaned\, sanitized\, and disinfected with products that are non-aerosol\, fragrance-free\, and have all ingredients listed on the label or are available on the website. \nIn the session\, the instructor will discuss the differences of cleaning\, sanitizing\, and disinfecting as well as the negative effects of current cleaning products. Examples will be provided of alternate products that can be used by educators. \nThe session will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday\, Sept. 7. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. \nThere is limited space for the class\, so registration is required.

DESCRIPTION:The Frick Environmental Center will host its Freedom Harvest event to celebrate freedom\, history\, and the harvest season in September. \nLearn More\nThe event\, which is part of the Regional Asset District’s RAD Days\, is a free\, all-ages\, family-friendly event highlighting the history and significance of the From Slavery to Freedom Garden at the Frick. The garden showcases plants and vegetables that freedom seekers used for nourishment and medicine on their journey north as they fled slavery. \nThe event is held in September to mark International Underground Railroad Month\, commemorating the escapes of such iconic figures as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. \nFreedom Harvest will be held on Saturday\, Sept. 7. Attendees can take part in a garden tour and tasting at noon. Registration will be available soon. \nFrom 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.\, attendees can take part in nature-based activities. There will be live musical performances from local musicians as well as garden bites prepared by local chefs. \nThe event will also include story hikes as well as various table activities and lawn games.
