SUMMARY:Making the Connection: Manganese Exposure and Children's IQ
DESCRIPTION:Manganese is an essential additive in the steel making process\, with as much as 90% of manganese consumption worldwide being used by the steel industry alone. This presentation will highlight the links between manganese in air pollution to neurodevelopmental consequences\, including lowered IQ in children. \nKeynote speaker\, Dr. Erin Haynes\, will present her work studying two Appalachian communities in rural Ohio\, followed by speakers from UPMC and GASP who will relate the subject to what’s happening in relation to Pittsburgh’s current steel industry. \nThis event is part of GASP’s Making the Connection series\, intended for medical professionals as well as community members interested in learning more about the links between air pollution and various health problems. It will begin with an hour of networking and refreshments from 5pm-6pm outside of the Hutchinson and Hayashi Auditorium\, before moving into the auditorium for the main program. Walk-in registration is welcomed. Online registration available.  \nShare this flyer with your networks.

SUMMARY:UnConference: Play for Change
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Playful Pittsburgh Collaborative and Philadelphia Playful Learning Landscapes\, join us on Tuesday\, October 30\, at the Carnegie Museum of Art in the Oakland community of Pittsburgh for UnConference: Play for Change\, a day-long event to think critically about play. There will be keynote speakers\, lightning talks\, hands-on activities and action plan time. \nWe will convene 25 teams of 5-7 individuals from neighborhoods\, boroughs\, and cities from across southwest Pennsylvania and West Virginia to: \n\nExplore WHAT is play\, and WHY play?\nUnderstand the play continuum and the role of “playful learning\,” such as the Six C’s (critical thinking\, communication\, collaboration\, culture/community\, creativity\, and connectivity) and their importance in positioning our children for the future.\nConsider a “play community.” Why they are important? And\, how to define a vision\, mission\, purpose\, and goals in the creation of your own playful community. We’ll talk about lessons learned from the Playful Pittsburgh Collaborative and the Philadelphia Playful Learning Landscapes.\nLearn more about transforming public spaces into community play and playful learning spaces such as hands on installations of playful learning modules.\nDevelop action plans for infusing play in your community. What challenges at the school\, neighborhood or city-level do you think ‘play’ may help address in your own community? How do we design communities with intention to address these challenges? We’ll talk about the Hazelwood Play Trail case study.\n\nAll while considering issues of equity\, transportation\, safety\, play across the ages\, community input and more. \nRegistration is now closed.
