DESCRIPTION:A+ Schools\, Carlow University’s Education Department\, and Trying Together are pleased to present\, “Restorative Justice Practices: Disrupting the School-to-Prison Pipeline” on Thursday\, March 21\, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Arsenal Middle School. \nAbout\nA long-time social justice activist\, civil rights trial attorney\, restorative justice practitioner\, writer\, professor\, and scholar with a PhD in Indigenous Knowledge\, keynote speaker\, Dr. Fania E. Davis is considered a leading national voice. Dr. Davis will share her personal journey to restorative justice. Attendees will also hear her presentation on what restorative justice is\, how it differs from other forms of justice\, and its history. Dr. Davis will also share the way it is being used in Oakland\, California’s schools and juvenile justice system. \nThe evening will conclude with a panel discussion between Dr. Davis and Mr. John Wetzel\, Secretary\, PA Department of Corrections. During Mr. Wetzel’s tenure an elimination of a 24-year average growth of 1\,500 inmates per year occurred presiding over the first population reduction in PA in more than four decades. DESCRIPTION:Part 1: Is There a Difference? Children’s Authentic Play Experiences vs. Play Based Classroom Activities:\nThis session will define and discuss the variations of authentic play\, playful experiences and play based activities that could potentially be offered within early learning settings. Participants will engage in resourceful discussions as well as complete independent activities that focus on providing more than just “free play” or teacher planned\, play-based activities. K1.8 C3 \nPart 2: Learning to Play\, Playing to Learn: Encouraging Play Within Early Childhood Classrooms:\n“Play acts as a mechanism into courageous\, creative and rigorous thinking in adulthood.” (T. Bruce\, London Metro University\, 2013). The benefits of children’s play can be life lasting\, as long as the experiences are developmentally appropriate\, positive and engaging. This course discusses children’s play and the role of play in early learning settings. Participants will take part in varied individual and group discussions and activities that focus on the definitions\, developmental mechanics and functions of play as well as become familiar with and brainstorm new strategies for encouraging play within children’s earliest classrooms. K2. 14 C1 \nPart 3: Loose Parts: Using Everyday Items to Enhance Children’s Creative Play:\nLoose parts are open-ended materials found\, bought or upcycled (ex: acorns\, hardware\, stones\, aluminum foil\, fabric scraps) that children can move\, manipulate\, control and change within their play. Loose parts are alluring and beautiful. Natural or synthetic\, they capture children’s curiosity\, give free reign to their imagination and empower creativity. This session discusses the importance of offering experiences and activities that highlight the usage of “loose parts” within the early learning setting. Participants will discuss strategies for stocking\, storing and providing loose parts within their settings. Sample activity ideas and learning area implementation strategies will also be brainstormed. K2.8 C2 \nPart 4: Loose Parts:\nInspiring Play with Infants and Toddlers: Infants and toddlers are researchers that are fascinated by the properties of objects and how things work. They explore materials with all of their senses and delight in cause and effect relationships. It is important for teachers and caregivers to provide open-ended materials (loose parts) that allow infants and toddlers to be in control of their inquiries as they gather and learn information about their environment. This session discusses the value of loose parts\, the need to meet the safety\, feature and functional needs of infants and toddlers and now to relate loose parts to the play-action characteristics of infants and toddlers. SUMMARY:100\,000 Books Campaign: Free Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:United Way’s 100\,000 Books initiative is giving away new and gently used books to support your students’ developing reading skills.  A variety of books are available for various age groups\, although this year’s selection appears to have more in the pre-k to 3rd-grade range. \nTo qualify\, your program must use a mentor – reader model. This event is first come – first serve\, so show up early. Bringing boxes is recommended. Register here. \nWhat is 100\,000 Books?\n100\,000 Books builds on research that demonstrates the importance of connecting a caring adult or older student with a child.  This mentor model has been shown to have a significant impact on the life of a child and will be the primary model that 100\,000 Books uses to support reading skills development.  Mentors (teachers\, librarians\, youth workers\, caring adults\, older students…) will reinforce reading skills through one time and on-going read-along opportunities that will help kids to build this critical love of reading. \nQuestions\nIf you have any questions\, please contact Tanya Baronti at tanya.baronti@unitedwayswpa.org or Joe Welsh at joe.welsh@unitedwayswpa.org.
