SUMMARY:Play
DESCRIPTION:Part 1: Is There a Difference? Children’s Authentic Play Experiences vs. Play Based Classroom Activities:\nThis session will define and discuss the variations of authentic play\, playful experiences and play based activities that could potentially be offered within early learning settings. Participants will engage in resourceful discussions as well as complete independent activities that focus on providing more than just “free play” or teacher planned\, play-based activities. K1.8 C3 \nPart 2: Learning to Play\, Playing to Learn: Encouraging Play Within Early Childhood Classrooms:\n“Play acts as a mechanism into courageous\, creative and rigorous thinking in adulthood.” (T. Bruce\, London Metro University\, 2013). The benefits of children’s play can be life lasting\, as long as the experiences are developmentally appropriate\, positive and engaging. This course discusses children’s play and the role of play in early learning settings. Participants will take part in varied individual and group discussions and activities that focus on the definitions\, developmental mechanics and functions of play as well as become familiar with and brainstorm new strategies for encouraging play within children’s earliest classrooms. K2. 14 C1 \nPart 3: Loose Parts: Using Everyday Items to Enhance Children’s Creative Play:\nLoose parts are open-ended materials found\, bought or upcycled (ex: acorns\, hardware\, stones\, aluminum foil\, fabric scraps) that children can move\, manipulate\, control and change within their play. Loose parts are alluring and beautiful. Natural or synthetic\, they capture children’s curiosity\, give free reign to their imagination and empower creativity. This session discusses the importance of offering experiences and activities that highlight the usage of “loose parts” within the early learning setting. Participants will discuss strategies for stocking\, storing and providing loose parts within their settings. Sample activity ideas and learning area implementation strategies will also be brainstormed. K2.8 C2 \nPart 4: Loose Parts:\nInspiring Play with Infants and Toddlers: Infants and toddlers are researchers that are fascinated by the properties of objects and how things work. They explore materials with all of their senses and delight in cause and effect relationships. It is important for teachers and caregivers to provide open-ended materials (loose parts) that allow infants and toddlers to be in control of their inquiries as they gather and learn information about their environment. This session discusses the value of loose parts\, the need to meet the safety\, feature and functional needs of infants and toddlers and now to relate loose parts to the play-action characteristics of infants and toddlers. K1.7 C2 \nMeets the following Keystone STARS Performance Standards indicators: (EC. 3.4.1) \n  \nPlay\nThis course is a four- part series lasting 12 hours\nMonday\, January 7 – Monday\, February 4\, 2019 \nRegister by Friday\, January 4 at Noon. \nFor more information and to register for credit\, visit pakeys.org. \nDownload the complete list of Trying Together professional development course offerings for October 2018 through March 2019 here.

SUMMARY:Tickets for Kids Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Tickets for Kids and the Sto-Rox Library announced the discussion dates for their new collaborative book club. The book chosen by their group is: “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City” by Matthew Desmond. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize\, this book was also the One Book One Community choice of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Public Health. \nIf you would like to attend\, RSVP to Jennifer Gray by email (jgray@forstorox.org) or phone (412.771.1222). Parking is located in the parking lot on the side of the building\, PNC parking lot after banking hours\, or on the street. \nDiscussion Dates\nDiscussions will be held at the Sto-Rox Library on the following dates: \n\nDecember 10\, 2018: 4-5:30 PM\nFebruary 11\, 2019: 6-7:30 PM\nApril 8\, 2019: 6-7:30 PM\nJune 10\, 2019: 6-7:30 PM\n\nAbout the Book\n“Evicted” by Matthew Desmond describes the plight of poor families who\, for want of a few dollars\, are forced to move from their homes\, apartments\, or trailers. An ethnographer\, Desmond shares the intimate vicissitudes of his subject/friends as they struggle to make ends meet while negotiating a bewildering system of slumlords\, public agencies\, law enforcement\, and courts\, a system that seems almost designed to reinforce a downward spiral of poverty. The consequences of eviction are especially felt by mothers with young children\, whose development is jeopardized by substandard housing\, low-quality neighborhoods\, and poor nutrition. \n*Information provided by Tickets for Kids Charities and Pitt Public Health*

SUMMARY:PA-AIMH Breakfast Network Meeting Series - Family Narratives: An Infant Mental Health Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Breakfast Network Meeting #5:\nFamily Narratives: An Infant Mental Health Intervention\nChristopher Dunkerley\, M.S. & Vivian Herman\, M.S.W.\nFriday\, June 8\, 2018\, 8:30-10:30 AM\nPaTTAN Pittsburgh \nThis presentation will provide a description of the use of Family Narratives in an existing EHS home-visiting program as an intervention to support healthy relationships between parents and their very young children. The presenters will describe the setting of this intervention as well as implementation strategies. The use of Family Narratives has been shown to provide a clearer picture to both families and intervention teams of the impact of life events on the mother-child relationship. More importantly\, the development of these narratives has helped both home visitors and families see that “change” is possible. The presenters will provide case examples that have utilized genograms\, family discussions\, development of “listening skills”\, reflective supervision\, and case and team conferences as the basis for narrative development. \nAbout the speakers: Vivian Herman\, M.S.W.\, provides Infant Mental Health consultation and has spent the past 25 years promoting and establishing Infant Mental Health services in Allegheny and surrounding counties. Her work primarily revolved around programs for mothers & babies living in poverty particularly with the University of Pittsburgh Early Head Start. She is a founding member of the PA-AIMH Board and provided instruction in IMH principles as adjunct faculty in Chatham University. She has been trained and rostered in Child-Parent Psychotherapy and provides home visitor coaching services based on IMH Endorsement competencies. Her focus has been on the promotion of relationships with families to support their own relationship to their children. She has both studied and presented in multiple arenas on Family Interactions and parent-child relationships. \nChris Dunkerley\, M.S.\, is the Director of the University of Pittsburgh\, Family Foundations Early Head Start program. He has a Master’s Degree from the University of Pittsburgh’s Child Development/Child Care program and an Infant Mental Health Certificate from Chatham University. Chris began his work with the Family Foundations EHS program in 1997 first as a Home Visitor\, then as the Child Development Specialist. He became the Program Coordinator for the Family Foundation’s Clairton site in 1999. In 2005 he was hired as the Family & Community Engagement/Training Coordinator and most recently he was named the Program Director in 2012. Family Foundations Early Head Start’s philosophy is based on Infant Mental Health principles and the work with dyadic relationships/ interactions between babies and their mom/dad/primary caregiver. In addition\, Chris was an adjunct faculty member in the Infant Mental Health Certificate Program at Chatham University. He participated in the Development of and continues to teach the online Practices & Principles of Infant Mental Health Intervention course to Certificate\, Bachelor-level and Master-level students. \nThe PA-AIMH Breakfast Network Meeting Series includes five breakfast meetings between September 2017 and June 2018\, each providing education about issues related to infant and early childhood mental health. Every meeting will include an expert speaker\, opportunities for Q&A\, some time to network with others\, and a light continental breakfast. \nAll are welcome! SUMMARY:Wired Kids: How Technology Impacts Early Child Development
DESCRIPTION:Register Now for the Local Interagency Coordinating Council (LICC) of Westmoreland County’s Early Learning Conference.  \nTechnology is a major factor in the development of today’s youngest generation. Presented by Cari Ebert\, M.S.\, CCC-SLP\, this one-day seminar examines the evidence to guide therapists\, educators\, and other early childhood professionals as we live and work in the “digital age”. \nAlthough technology is available at our fingertips\, this does not necessarily mean we should be using it with very young children. Infants\, toddlers and preschool age children do not learn the same way as older children and adults learn. This seminar aims to consider what is appropriate for the developing brain and body. Professionals will gain powerful evidence-based information regarding best practices for technology use in therapy and in the early childhood classroom. \n*Register by April 6\, 2018\n**Providers are eligible for Act 48 and DHS/PQAS hours \n  \n
