SUMMARY:Storybook STEAM
DESCRIPTION:Join the Allegheny Intermediate Unit for Storybook STEAM\, an introduction of the dual approach to early learning that combines storytelling with hands-on learning in the fields of STEAM. \nAttendees will learn to engage children’s natural curiosity and creativity\, while also helping them develop important problem-solving and critical thinking skills. \nEvent Details\nThursday\, May 11 | 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. \nAllegheny Intermediate Unit\n475 East Waterfront Drive\nHomestead\, PA 15120 \nRegistration not required. \nAbout Storybook STEAM Lessons\nIn a Storybook STEAM lesson\, a teacher or educator begins by reading a storybook that relates to a particular STEM or STEAM concept. The storybook serves as a starting point for the lesson\, providing context and engaging students’ imaginations. After the story\, students are given a hands-on activity or project that relates to the STEM or STEAM concept introduced in the story. For example\, after reading a story about the water cycle\, students might conduct an experiment to observe the different stages of the water cycle. \nThe goal of Storybook STEAM is to make STEM and STEAM concepts more accessible and engaging for children. By using storytelling as a starting point\, children are more likely to be motivated and interested in learning about these subjects. Additionally\, by incorporating arts and creativity into STEM learning\, Storybook STEAM helps children develop a well-rounded set of skills that will serve them well in the future. \nOverall\, Storybook STEAM is a creative and effective approach to teaching STEM and STEAM concepts to young children. It encourages children to think critically and creatively\, and it helps make these important subjects more accessible and engaging. \nLearn More\nThis event is part of Remake Learning Days. To learn more\, visit the Remake Learning Days website.

SUMMARY:How Family Engagement Supports Kindergarten Readiness & Early School Success
DESCRIPTION:Family engagement is a critical driver in ensuring that all children enter kindergarten “ready to learn” and experience early school success. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics\, kindergarten readiness can impact how successful a child is in high school and beyond\, leading to better grades and lower dropout rates\, as well as better health and lifestyle habits. Children who enter school with key readiness skills have an 82 percent chance of mastering basic skills by age 11\, compared with 45 percent for young children who are not “kindergarten ready.” Yet\, many children nationwide are still unable to reach this pivotal benchmark. \nJoin the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) at this webinar to hear from education leaders and practitioners who will share the latest research and on-the-ground lessons for how family engagement has improved kindergarten readiness and early school success in their states\, districts\, and communities. \nModerated by Yolie Flores\, President and CEO of Families In Schools\, this panel conversation will explore: \n\nWhy engaging families early matters for children’s long-term success\nHow innovative technologies can be leveraged to support families\nThe role that curriculum\, professional development\, and supplemental resources play in family engagement\n\nSession Details\nTuesday\, June 27 | 1 – 2:30 p.m. \nVirtual \nRegister \nLearn More\nThis webinar is the fifth in a series of conversations designed to boost family engagement practices between school and home.
