IECMH Shares Resources on How Technology Can Support Children’s Growth

The Infant Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (IECMH) program discusses the importance of unplugging from technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in its latest Bright Kids Bright Future newsletter.

But it also discusses how technology can be used in positive ways to support children’s growth while balancing its use with play, real-world learning, and high-quality interactions.

In the newsletter, the IECMH discusses how technology is evolving quickly – including the use of AI – and how children are naturally curious about these tools.

The program provides guidance for early childhood educators on how to use technology in early education settings and has shared a toolkit that helps educators to build knowledge about screens, media habits, and digital wellness in early childhood. There is also a discussion on the benefits and risks of screen time for neurodivergent children and another on how adults should guide preschoolers’ understanding of AI.

IECMH Shares Resources on Building Self-Esteem and Independence in Children

The Infant Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (IECMH) program has provided resources for July on how to promote independence in children and help them to develop self-confidence.

The program notes that caregivers can begin nurturing a child’s self-esteem from the moment they are born. It suggested several resources by age group that include books and activities that caregivers can use early on to help build confidence. These include:

New Early Childhood Mental Health Survey Available

The Pennsylvania Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL) invites early childhood education professionals, family members, higher education staff, and mental, physical, and oral healthcare professionals to take a brief survey regarding their experiences and communications around early social-emotional development.

Survey results will be used to assist the Infant Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (IECMH) Project in developing tools for families and professionals to use in understanding and obtaining supports around early childhood social-emotional health.
