Considering Culture when Assessing and Diagnosing Young Children

Thursday, 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm Free – $30

Join Zero to Three on May 27 for “Considering Culture when Assessing and Diagnosing Young Children” to learn about the intersection of culture and diagnosis.

About

If professionals try to assess and diagnose developmental and mental challenges without considering culture, they risk misunderstanding, misdiagnosis, and missed connections. This talk explores the intersection of culture and diagnosis, considering:

    • cultural explanations of a child’s difficulties,
    • cultural factors related to the child’s environment, and
    • cultural features of the relationship between the parents/caregivers and the clinician.

Presenters will illustrate these intersections through a case vignette, with a particular focus on autism spectrum disorder.
