Dismantling Oppressive Systems: Building Just Communities

Monday, 12:00 pm to 12:00 pm

Join the University of Pittsburgh from July 26 – 29 for “Diversity Forum 2021” to learn about racial justice and opportunities to actuate intentional, meaningful change.

The 2021 Diversity Forum, “Dismantling Oppressive Systems: Building Just Communities,” will engage and equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to:

    • identify sources of systemic oppression,
    • consider strategies for dismantling that oppression, and
    • actions critical in fostering more equitable and just communities in which we live, work, and learn.

The forum will focus on outlining the key concepts underpinning social justice, illuminating examples of systemic injustice, and examining means and methods of infusing equitable and just policies and practices across multiple sectors. Participants will discuss theories of racial/social identity development that can help in understanding oneself, others, and intergroup dynamics in the context of implementing social justice efforts.

Learning Objectives

    1. Understand how our socialization informs our biases and positions us to perpetuate structural inequalities.
    2. Understand the barriers that inhibit us from expanding our diversity consciousness and fully embracing different cultures, perspectives, and people.
    3. Recognize the breadth of competencies necessary to engage and advance multicultural communities.
    4. Utilize an equity lens to analyze and revise policies and practices to foster equitable and just outcomes in our communities.
    5. Build communities of dialogue and support in acting against systemic oppression.

To register, visit the University of Pittsburgh website. There is no cost to participate, and all are welcome.
