Summer EmployHER Pittsburgh Program Kick Off & Opportunity Fair

Join EmployHER Pittsburgh for their Summer Program Kick & Opportunity Fair to explore a variety of hiring opportunities and career resources from local Pittsburgh companies, organizations, and agencies.

When: Monday, 7/31 | 12 – 6 p.m. (Last participant arrival at 5 p.m.)

Where: Commonwealth Charter Academy, 162 E Bridge Street, Unit 100, Homestead, Pa. 15120

Register

Attendees will get the opportunity to meet hiring employers, receive resume reviews, get professional head shots, enroll in education and training programs, receive food, housing, and child care support, and participate in self-care experiences.

Following this even fair, attendees will have six months of support with finding a job, networking, and education.

Light refreshments, snacks, and lunch will be available, and onsite child care will be provided at no cost. Global Wordsmiths Translation Services (Spanish and Arabic) will be on site. Free parking is available in the parking lot under the bridge.

EmployHER Pittsburgh is a collaborative initiative between Dress for Success Pittsburgh, New Century Careers, and When She Thrives aimed at providing access to better employment, personal development, and educational opportunities for women in Allegheny County.

Allegheny County Family Resource Map Highlights Supports for Locals

Did you know the Early Learning Resource Center (ELRC) Region 5 offers an interactive, online tool to help families navigate area programs and services?

The Allegheny County Family Resource Map provides caregivers of young children and other residents in Allegheny County the opportunity to locate available supports closest to them.

About the Allegheny County Family Resource Map

Launched in 2020, the map highlights the addresses, phone numbers, and websites of a variety of family supports, including those on:

  • aging
  • care and education
  • employment
  • family activities
  • food
  • health
  • housing
  • new parents
  • outdoors and recreation
  • transportation, and
  • wi-fi locations

Through the map, families can find countywide resources and services closest to them, such as senior community centers, family centers, early learning programs, public schools, WIC offices, parks, libraries, food pantries, diaper banks, clinics, public housing, Port Authority bus stops, and more.

Homewood Children’s Village AmeriCorps Applications Open

Homewood Children’s Village is still recruiting AmeriCorps Members for this school year! Members will serve a total of 1,200 hours in an educational school setting 4.5 days a week. They will tutor students in math and reading, model positive behavior, promote self-determination, and connect students to enriching out-of-school opportunities. Interested individuals may apply online.

About the Program

Homewood Children’s Village (HCV) is currently looking for steadfast, compassionate, and adaptable individuals to serve as HCV AmeriCorps Members during the 2021-2022 school year! Members will serve a total of 1200 hours in an educational school setting 4.5 days a week, where they will (1) tutor students in math and reading, (2) model positive behavior and promote self-determination, and (3) connect students to enriching out-of-school opportunities. Additionally, members will collaborate with school staff and local partners to develop and implement a long-term service project that addresses a need within the Homewood community.

HCV AmeriCorps Members will learn the day-to-day operations of primary education environments, expand their professional networks, and receive professional development training from active community leaders and subject matter experts–all while receiving a pre-tax bi-weekly living allowance of $991.55 (at $1,983 per month, HCV’s living allowance is among the highest in the state of Pennsylvania). Upon successful completion of the program, members will receive a $4,441.50 SEGAL Education Award that can be applied toward educational expenses or existing federal student loans.

Jeremiah’s Place, Pittsburgh’s ONLY Crisis Nursery, is seeking Therapeutic Child Care Staff for their weekend overnight shift (Friday – Sunday; 7 p.m. – 7 a.m.). Pre-K Counts Lead Teacher

Heritage Community Initiatives is seeking a Pre-K Counts Lead Teacher to provide high-quality programming within their assigned classroom of three- to five-year-olds. This professional must be committed to best practices according to Pre-K Counts regulations and guidelines, and must be passionate about the early care and education field and working with children. Assistant Group Supervisor

Fifth Avenue Family Child Care is looking for a dynamic Assistant Group Supervisor with experience working with infants to preschool-aged children to join their team full time, starting in January 2021. This is a full-time position. This professional must be willing to travel.

To qualify, applicants must meet a Pennsylvania residency requirement and have at least two years of professional experience providing direct services to children and youth and a bachelor’s degree that includes 24 semester hours of college-level courses related to early childhood, or have an equivalent combination of professional experience and training.

Jeremiah’s Place: Spring Open House

Join Jeremiah’s Place for their Spring Open House on Thursday, April 25th to take a tour of Pittsburgh’s only emergency child care center, explore volunteer and employment opportunities, and learn more about how you can utilize their services.

About Jeremiah’s Place

Jeremiah’s Place provides emergency care for children ages 0-6 for a few hours or a few days based on the needs of the family. The primary focus at Jeremiah’s place is to keep children safe and to provide a supportive solution for families in need. Located in the East Liberty section of Pittsburgh, Jeremiah’s Place is staffed by trauma-informed caregivers and social workers. All services provided by Jeremiah’s Place are free, available 24 hours a day, and most importantly, judgment-free.

Councilperson Strassburger Introduces Legislation to Combat Pregnancy Discrimination

Today, Pittsburgh City Councilperson Erika Strassburger announced the introduction of legislation to safeguard employment protections for pregnant employees, individuals seeking to become pregnant, and their partners. In addition, the City of Pittsburgh’s Commission on Human Relations released an accompanying Guidance Document to empower employers to take steps to prevent discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions and events.

 

Strassburger’s Statement

“Employees should not be forced to choose between their livelihood and their reproductive decisions. My legislation ensures that pregnant workers, regardless of whether they work in a corporate office, a retail store, or a warehouse, can work in a safe and comfortable environment, attend medical appointments, and sustain a healthy pregnancy without fear of losing their job or benefits,” said Councilperson Strassburger. “I encourage employers citywide to review the Guidance Document to help prevent pregnancy-based discrimination from ever occurring.”

Details and Impact

Councilperson Strassburger’s legislation would explicitly prohibit employment discrimination against pregnant individuals, those seeking to become pregnant, and their partners before, during, and after the nine-month gestation period and after childbirth. This change to the City Code may require employers to provide reasonable modifications to employees’ workspaces and offer justifiable flexibility in scheduling to allow employees and their partners to attend procedures, tests, and other appointments associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions. With this change, Pittsburgh would become one of the first jurisdictions nationwide to clearly safeguard employment protections for the partners of pregnant employees. Additionally, the legislation would make Pittsburgh one of few cities to guarantee employment protections for related events that occur before, during, and after gestation and after childbirth.
