A+ Schools Asks Programs Serving Children to Take Transportation Survey

A+ Schools is asking Pittsburgh nonprofits that serve children or youth to take a survey regarding the costs involved for the transportation of children to their programs.

A+ Schools notes that transportation is often cited as a barrier for why children don’t take advantage of programs that support their academic or social-emotional growth. However, many programs in the Pittsburgh region provide free transportation, whether it’s in the form of Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus passes or vans or shuttles.

A+ Schools created a survey to help better understand the transportation costs for youth-serving nonprofits in Pittsburgh. The goal is to increase funding for youth Pittsburgh Regional Transit access that would help them get to school, sports, tutoring, mentoring, and other out-of-school time activities.

The survey only takes about two minutes to complete. A+ Schools will not share any participating organization’s name or information that it provides without permission.

Questions in the survey include:

The monthly cost for transportation for students in the program
How much of that cost is related to buying Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus passes
How much a program would anticipate saving if students had a monthly bus pass that would allow them unlimited rides

Pittsburgh Residents Can Get 50% Discounts on PRT Options with ConnectCard

Allegheny County residents can get a more than 50% discount on Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) options by applying for Allegheny Go’s ConnectCard.

County residents can ride PRT’s buses, light rail, and other means of transportation for more than 50% off with the card.

To qualify for the card, one must:

Be an Allegheny County resident
Be between the ages of 12 and 64
Have somebody in their household who currently receives SNAP benefits

Those interested in applying for the ConnectCard can fill out an application online. On the application, choose the “Enroll using a ConnectCard” option.

A 50% discount will be applied when fares are bought at ConnectCard machines throughout the service area, PRT Downtown Service Center, the ConnectCard online portal, and participating retail outlets, including most Giant Eagle and Goodwill locations.

Allegheny Go can be downloaded to the Ready2Ride app on a mobile device. When applying online, select the “Enroll using the Ready2Ride app” on the application.

Allegheny GO to Offer Discounted Fare Rates for SNAP Recipients

Starting in June, Allegheny County residents who use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be eligible for discounted Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) fares.

Allegheny GO will offer a 50% discounted fare for working-age Allegheny County residents who benefit from SNAP and their children. More than 130,000 county residents will be eligible to participate. Enrollment is scheduled to begin on June 3.

To be eligible in the program, participants must:

Currently reside in Allegheny County
Be between the ages of 12 and 64
Have been receiving SNAP benefits for three months

Individuals who currently receive a fare discount through other programs are not eligible to participate. All members of a SNAP household between the ages of 12 and 17 are eligible for the discount. All children ages five and younger always ride PRT for free.

The county conducted a discounted fares pilot to determine the future design of the program. It has since published the results of the program.

Due to its success, the county decided to make the program a permanent offering. Anyone who was part of the pilot will be contacted on how to join the program.

How to Sign Up

Applicants should download Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s Ready2Ride app from the Apple App Store or Google Play before applying for the program on the Allegheny GO website.

Initially, Allegheny GO will be available to applicants with smartphones. It will be available on PRT’s next-generation smartcard when it launches next year.

Riders with questions about downloading Ready2Ride or the application process should call 412-442-2000. Families can also visit PRT’s website to learn more about existing discount programs for children.
