Juneteenth-Themed Storytime at Frick Environmental Center

Black Power Storytime with BOOM Concepts will run from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Juneteenth, which is Thursday, June 19, at the Frick Environmental Center, located at 2005 Beechwood Blvd.

Artist and entrepreneur DS Kinsel will join Frick Environmental Center Director James A. Brown to read stories to children. The storytime will be followed by a short nature activity led by a PPC naturalist educator.

The program is open to families with children of all ages, but is ideal for families with children, ages 3 to 9. Caregivers must accompany their children throughout the duration of the program.

Frick Environmental Center to Hold Grand Opening for Sensory Nature Trail

The Frick Environmental Center will hold a grand opening for its Outdoor Discovery Space and Sensory Nature Trail on Thursday, May 15.

The ⅓-mile accessible trail is a new space that is designed to create an inclusive, nature-rich experience for people of all abilities. It features hands-on sensory discovery stations and gathering spaces for relaxation and reflection. 

The grand opening, which runs from 10 a.m. to noon, will kick off at the Frick Environmental Center with a ribbon cutting and remarks from community leaders at 10:15 a.m. 

Attendees will be able to engage with naturalist educators along the trail and experience interactive learning opportunities. Light refreshments will be served.

Designated accessible parking for the event will be available under the solar array. General parking is available near the Frick Environmental Center entrance and along Beechwood Boulevard.

Freedom Harvest

The Frick Environmental Center will host its Freedom Harvest event to celebrate freedom, history, and the harvest season in September.

The event, which is part of the Regional Asset District’s RAD Days, is a free, all-ages, family-friendly event highlighting the history and significance of the From Slavery to Freedom Garden at the Frick. The garden showcases plants and vegetables that freedom seekers used for nourishment and medicine on their journey north as they fled slavery.

The event is held in September to mark International Underground Railroad Month, commemorating the escapes of such iconic figures as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass.

Freedom Harvest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7. Attendees can take part in a garden tour and tasting at noon. Registration will be available soon.

From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., attendees can take part in nature-based activities. There will be live musical performances from local musicians as well as garden bites prepared by local chefs.

The event will also include story hikes as well as various table activities and lawn games. Various community organizations will offer educational presentations and craft activities.

Black Power Story Time

In celebration of Juneteenth, the Frick Environmental Center will host Black Power Storytime on June 19. The event will also include a garden activity.

Attendees will meet in the From Slavery to Freedom Garden for a storytime event that celebrates Juneteenth. The event, presented by BOOM Concepts, will feature award-winning artist and entrepreneur DS Kinsel, who will read two children’s stories.

Afterward, children and their caregivers will be able to participate in a short garden activity led by Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy naturalist educators. The program is best suited for families with children ages four to 9.

Black Power Storytime will run from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19. It is located at 2005 Beechwood Boulevard in Pittsburgh.

There is a parking lot and additional on-street parking by the center. You can reach the center by bus via the 61A and 61B and get off at the Forbes and Dallas avenues stop. The center is a five-minute walk from the bus stop.

World Migratory Bird Day

The Frick Environmental Center will host events centered around World Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 11.

World Migratory Bird Day is an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. The day will include events for children, adults and families. It will also include several scheduled events, including early birding, a story hike, accessible birding, and a stream exploration.
This year’s focus is on the importance of insects for migratory birds. Select events require registration for the day, which runs from 7 a.m. to noon.
