Join Buzzword for a series of family fun events at The Homewood Early Learning Hub & Family Center in March!
The focus of these events is to give children from birth to age five, and their caregivers, the opportunity to explore elements of our newest BUZZ Box, featuring our latest Buzzword: SHARE.
Together, we will SHARE stories of our friends, families, communities, and cultures through art, dance, singing, science, and reading. Each family will also get to take a BUZZ Box home with them!
Dinner will be provided. Registration prior to the event is strongly encouraged.

Dyslexia Awareness Month in October aims to support those with this learning difficulty. Dyslexia is not a disorder of any kind; but it is a learning impairment that causes problems with writing, reading, and spelling.
The intelligence of dyslexic people is unaffected. This misunderstanding of the condition leads to stigmas, which Dyslexia Awareness Month aims to eradicate.
The International Dyslexia Association defines dyslexia as the following:
“Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”

The Pennsylvania Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL) is going on a virtual Summer Learning and Literacy Road Trip from June to August 2022.
Children, families, and caregivers are invited to follow along and discover highlighted Pennsylvania libraries and the resources available to support early literacy and learning.
Along the way, get information about Pennsylvania State Parks with resources and activities to do with children. All activities align with the PA Early Learning Standards and can be done within the featured state park or at home.

Join the Program Quality Assessment (PQA) team for the upcoming Let’s Talk Quality Series. The Let’s Talk Quality Series includes three monthly activities – Let’s Talk Quality Blog, Let’s Talk Quality Webinar, and the newest, Let’s Talk Quality Spotlight. Each month the PQA team will publish a blog article, create a webinar, and offer a spotlight session focused on a particular early education topic. Join Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh for an upcoming professional development session, “Finding the Best Books for Babies.” Individuals may register for this online event via Zoom.
Each year since 2000, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has led a panel of local librarians and child development experts in choosing ten best books published for babies in the past year. The resulting annual Best Books for Babies booklist, a nationally recognized guide, assists parents, teachers and caregivers in selecting high quality materials that will delight and engage babies age birth to 18 months. In this workshop, participants will learn what makes a Best Book for Babies and will leave with practical tips for evaluating and selecting books for babies.
This virtual workshop will be hosted on Zoom. Attendees will receive 1 hour of PQAS credit.
Are you looking for opportunities for your child to learn crucial reading skills such as rhyming, letter sounds, and phonemic awareness? Check out 412 Rhymes, a free ten-week text message-based literacy program for children ages three- to five-years-old living in Pittsburgh!
412 Rhymes is a free ten-week text message-based literacy program for three- to five-year-old children who live in Pittsburgh. Through the program, children enjoy short, engaging lessons that teach crucial beginning reading skills such as rhyming, letter sounds, and phonemic awareness. Lessons will be delivered via text message each week. Participants can choose to receive the lesson on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays or Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
An optional 15-minute literacy screening is also available before the start and after the end of the program. This screening will give parents and caregivers information about the literacy development of the child participating in the program. This screening is for informational purposes only.
This upcoming program begins on Monday, February 8, 2021. To register for this program, visit the 412 Rhymes webpage. Registration is open to the first 350 registrants. After reaching 350 registrants, additional registrants will be placed on a program waitlist.

Join the Pennsylvania Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL) and Early Intervention Technical Assistance (EITA) from January through March 2021 for their 30-minute “Let’s Chat About Early Language and Literacy” webinars.
These 30-minute webinars will be offered at no cost to participants. Each session will be offered at 8:30 a.m. and repeated at 1:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Fridays of each month. This series runs from January through March 2021. Chat topics will include the following:
