Voter Registration Celebration

The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh will host three upcoming voter registration celebrations at its Family Support Centers in August.

The events will combine music, food, and a chance to register to vote or update voter registration. The three events will be held on:

  • Aug. 28, noon to 3 p.m. at Northview Heights, located at 437 Mt. Pleasant Rd.
  • Aug. 29, noon to 3 p.m. at East Hills, located at 2320 East Hills Drive Rear
  • Aug. 30, 2 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Duquesne, located at One Library Place

The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh will hold two upcoming volunteer opportunities for its national voter registration campaign.

Volunteers will be placed at tables during festivals with materials from the Urban League’s Reclaim Your Vote campaign. To volunteer with the Urban League, participants will need to fill out the free Pennsylvania Access to Criminal History (PATCH) form and the PA Child Abuse Clearance form.

The upcoming dates are:

Harambee Soul Fest (Williamsburg): 9 a.m. to noon or noon to 3 p.m. on June 28 and 30

Open Streets (through BikePGH): 10 a.m. to noon or noon to 2 p.m. on June 29

Those interested should fill out a form. Upon completing clearances, email them to sking@ulpgh.org.

2024 State of Black Pittsburgh: Housing Stability, Electoral Impact

The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh will host its annual State of Black Pittsburgh event on June 27, discussing such topics as housing and voting.

The 2024 State of Black Pittsburgh highlights challenges and accomplishments in the work of enabling African Americans in Southwestern Pennsylvania to achieve economic self-reliance, parity, power, and civil rights.

This year’s moderator will be Dr. Clyde W. Pickett, of the University of Pittsburgh. Housing panelists will include:

  • Carlos T. Carter, president & CEO of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh
  • Zabriawn Smith, of Aliquippa Green
  • Marsha Grayson, COO of the Housing Authority of Pittsburgh
  • Marimba Milliones, president & CEO of the Hill District CDC

Election panelists will include:

  • Miracle Jones, director of advocacy and policy for 1Hood Media
  • Khalif Ali, director of the New PA Project Education Fund
  • Khari Mosley, of the Pittsburgh City Council
  • Aundre Robinson, of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh

More Details

The doors will open and breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. at the University of Pittsburgh’s Teplitz Moot Courtroom in the Barco Law Building. The board of directors annual meeting will run from 8 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. and is open to members only. The main event runs from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Pittsburgh Youth Changemakers Conference & State of Black Pittsburgh

North Allegheny (NA) for Change, in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh and the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, invites local high school and early college students to their first-ever Pittsburgh Youth Changemakers Conference.

The conference—a two-day transformative experience filled with dynamic workshops, inspiring speakers, and a network of like-minded visionaries ready to make a difference in Pittsburgh—will welcome Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey for a keynote address.

The Pittsburgh Youth Changemakers Conference will also feature the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh’s highly-anticipated annual State of Black Pittsburgh event, which highlights challenges and accomplishments in the work of enabling African Americans in Southwestern Pennsylvania to achieve economic self-reliance, parity, power, and civil rights.

The State of Black Pittsburgh is open to all individuals.

State of Black Pittsburgh

The State of Black Pittsburgh plenary session will be livestreamed by ONE Hood Media.

In the plenary session titled, “Building Peace and Prosperity in Our Neighborhoods,” One Hood Media’s Jasiri X, Urban League President & CEO Carlos T. Carter, and a young adult and victim of gun violence, Manny Townsend, will be joined by Tammy Thompson, Executive Director of Catapult Pittsburgh, to discuss how we can work together toward equity and justice.

Dr. Clyde Pickett from the University of Pittsburgh will serve as the moderator for the discussion.

Mingle with members of Vote School Board First! coalition organizations to learn more about why they are involved, what issues they care about most, and why you should care too!

About the Fundraiser

Happening at Wigle Whiskey Distillery on Monday, May 6 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., this event is an opportunity to learn more about and donate to the Vote School Board First! 2019 campaign. A portion of all drinks and bottle sales will be donated.
