Vision to Learn Mobile Optometrist Visits for Children

Vision to Learn’s Mobile Clinic will be visiting the Hill District Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh on Wednesday, August 9, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to provide free eye exams to children and teens ages four – 18 with parent/guardian permission.

Appointments will take 15-20 minutes and must be scheduled with the branch in advance of the clinic.

Story Time with the Hill District Early Literacy Initiative and Macedonia FACE

Join Macedonia FACE and the Hill District Early Literacy Initiative (HDELI) for “Story Time,” featuring Guest Storyteller and author Dr. Tammi LeNez Hunt. Dr. LeNez will read her book “Sunni Rae’s World: What Are Your Super Powers?

A children’s craft/activity will precede the reading, and pizza, popsicles, and snacks will be provided.

Hill District Conducting Survey on Parent Engagement in Child Literacy

The Hill District Early Literacy Initiative (HDELI), supported by the Macedonia Family and Community Enrichment Center (FACE), is conducting a survey on parent engagement in child literacy.

About the Survey

Entitled, “Hill District Early Literacy Initiative Survey,” the poll aims to discover strategies caregivers use to engage their children in reading comprehension, and establish what resources and supports parents need to assist in that engagement.

Just seven questions, the survey is brief and takes only five minutes to complete. HDELI encourages parents and caregivers of young children in the Hill District to complete it.

LDA of PA Offering Free Reading Tutoring to Children in Hill District

The Learning Disabilities Association of Pennsylvania (LDA of PA) is offering free reading tutoring to pre-k and kindergarten students living in the Hill District.

Tutoring takes place every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Hill District Carnegie Library on Centre Avenue.

  • Alphabetic principle
  • Sound mastery

Best Books for Babies Diaper Distribution-CLP Hill District

Families with babies ages birth-18 months can attend and receive a two-week supply of diapers (sizes newborn – 4 available), as well as a Best Books for Babies book bundle at this event. While supplies last. No registration required.

Drive-Thru Distribution

Enter distribution line at intersection of Wylie Avenue and Kirkpatrick Street and stay in line to reach the distribution site in the lower parking lot of Central Baptist Church – located across Kirkpatrick Street from CLP – Hill District.

Walk-Up Distribution

Enter walk-up distribution line through CLP – Hill District’s main entrance on Centre Avenue and stay in line to reach the distribution site in the August Wilson room. Please reserve the Walk-Up Distribution for those without cars.

Carnegie Library Serving Summer Meals for Children

Beginning June 17, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will offer free summer meals/snacks to Pittsburgh youth on weekdays through August 23.

About

In summer 2019, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will continue its participation in the Summer Food Service Program in order to ensure even more Pittsburgh youth have access to free food during summer vacation. Meals and activities will be provided during times listed below while supplies last and are for youth ages 18 and younger, and for persons with disabilities up to age 21.

Meals are being offered locally in collaboration with Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Pittsburgh CitiParks as part of the federally funded Summer Food Service Program.
