Join the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to plant trees in Homewood. Participants will also learn about different types of native trees, proper tree planting practices, and tree care. RIF Pittsburgh Seeks Mentors for Elementary Students

Reading Is FUNdamental Pittsburgh is seeking volunteers for its Everybody Wins! program.

About

Everybody Wins! is a school-based literacy mentoring program that pairs kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-grade students with a caring adult to build a meaningful relationship while sharing conversation, good books, and literacy-related activities for one hour a week. These consistent, one-on-one experiences increase a child’s opportunity for success, both academically and in life.

Help an elementary student build literacy skills and develop a lifelong love of reading by volunteering as a mentor today!

Being a School Board member is one of the most important elected positions in Pittsburgh. They play a vital role in our community property, including setting tax rates, negotiating the work rules and pay for all school staff, hiring key school administrators, and enacting policies that govern the district and budget. However, only one in five registered voters cast their votes during school board elections.

How Can You Help?

On May 21, 2019, community members will vote in the primary elections for Districts 2, 4, 6 and 8. You can help make sure voters are informed about the upcoming School Board elections by signing up to volunteer today and talking with your friends and neighbors. Interested volunteers can sign up for varying types of opportunities, including:

  • Door Knocking,
  • Phone Banking, and
  • Giving Voters Information on Election Day.

Are you interested in volunteering small acts of kindness towards your neighbors this April?

Children and families are invited to join Fred Rogers Productions on Saturday, April 13th for a day filled with fun family volunteer activities that aid neighbors in need, including:

  • Washing fire trucks,
  • Cleaning a park or playground,
  • Making greeting cards,
  • Play games with seniors, and
  • Helping out at a library!

Homewood Event Series: Get Up

Join Operation Better Block this April and May for the Fuel Up, Redd Up, Get Up event series (4/12, 20, & 5/5).

May 5: Get Up

The series will close on May 5 by gathering to cheer on the marathon runners as they make their way through the Homewood community. Volunteer sign-ups will be available for the marathon through Camille via phone at 412.731.1908 or by visiting the Operation Better Block office.

Attendees of this event are encouraged to provide your name and t-shirt size and will meet in front of the Homewood House from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Earth Day

Friday, April 26

6 – 9 p.m. | Community Campfire*

Join Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy for an all-ages community campfire under the stars. They’ll have the fire and sticks, you bring your own hot dogs and s’more fixings. Note: This event takes place at Falls Ravine Shelter (click here for directions to nearby trail entrance).

Saturday, April 27th

8 – 11 a.m. | Volunteer Event

Make a positive mark on your park as a volunteer! This event is held in partnership with Comcast.

This event is now full. Registrations are no longer being accepted.

11 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. | Naturalist-led Walks and Hikes

Join Parks Conservancy naturalists and partners from across the city for a variety of hikes and walks throughout Frick Park. Hikes and walks are each about one hour long and start at 12 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Ongoing | Activities, Exhibits, and Events

Throughout Earth Day 2019, participants can also find and experience local exhibitors, organizations, and artists.

Activities include:

  • Nature play
  • Supervised tree climbing
  • Giant games
  • Pop-up Imagination Playground
  • Bubbles.

This event is held in partnership with the City of Pittsburgh.

Transportation

If you’re looking to attend these Earth Day celebrations, Trying Together is providing free bus transportation! Registration is required.

  • Friday, April 26 | Bus departs from 7219 Kelly Street at 6 p.m.; returns at 8:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 27 | Bus departs from Homewood Avenue and Kelly Street at 1:30 p.m.; returns at 4:15 p.m.

Jeremiah’s Place: Spring Open House

Join Jeremiah’s Place for their Spring Open House on Thursday, April 25th to take a tour of Pittsburgh’s only emergency child care center, explore volunteer and employment opportunities, and learn more about how you can utilize their services.

About Jeremiah’s Place

Jeremiah’s Place provides emergency care for children ages 0-6 for a few hours or a few days based on the needs of the family. The primary focus at Jeremiah’s place is to keep children safe and to provide a supportive solution for families in need. Located in the East Liberty section of Pittsburgh, Jeremiah’s Place is staffed by trauma-informed caregivers and social workers. All services provided by Jeremiah’s Place are free, available 24 hours a day, and most importantly, judgment-free.

Volunteer Opportunity: Pre-K for PA Phone Bank

Do you care about early childhood? Would you like every child in Pennsylvania to have access to affordable, high-quality early learning experiences? Register below to join Trying Together at our home office in the Wightman School Community Building at 5604 Solway Street on March 15 and 16. We will be holding phone bank hours to contact and recruit volunteers who can help us get the word out about the Pre-K for PA Campaign during the upcoming election season.

Phone Bank Shifts

  • Thursday, March 15, Noon – 2:00 p.m.
  • Friday, March 16, Noon – 2:00 p.m.

Pizza and refreshments will be provided.

Can’t make it on these dates? We also need volunteers through the May 2018 primary election to help us reach out to candidates, campaigns, and new supporters. Please complete the registration form below and let us know if you can help with these activities.
